Ride With The Valkyries

If you’re familiar with Francis Ford Coppola’s classic 1978 film Apocalypse Now, then you can’t forget the epic scene depicting a helicopter-borne assault on a Viet Cong-held village while loudspeakers blare out Richard Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries.” That martial music, both ominous and triumphant, sets the tone for one of the most iconic moments in cinema history. It also helped renew interest about who the “real” Valkyries were and why the soaring music perfectly matched their literary image. According to Norse mythology, the Valkyries were Germanic goddesses who carried the souls of the bravest Viking warriors killed in battle to Valhalla. These warrior women have returned—but not to accompany your soul to Odin’s vast hall where only the souls of the brave may rest in peace, but on a new series of silver medals from the prestigious Germania Mint.

Hildegard Comes Armed To The Teeth

The first release in the series celebrates Hildegard, whose name is derived from the Old High German words hildr, which means “battle,” and gard, which means “enclosure,” which pretty much sums up a battlefield. Hildegard is depicted on the obverse of this medal armed with a shield and spear standing guard before a stronghold surrounded by a high wooden palisade. Joining her are a pair of wolves, one at her side and one in the background howling at the moon. The medal’s reverse is a combination of the Germania Mint’s double-headed eagle crest, Germanic runes, and a howling wolf in a design meant to resemble a shield.

Thousands of years before the Latin alphabet was introduced in Northern Europe, the Runic alphabet was used to write Germanic languages. Hildegard’s name is spelled on this medal with a style that resembles this ancient script. You can see it in a Eihwaz (ᛇ) symbol, which represents stability, reliability, strength, tree of life, eternity, resilience, and longevity; and a Laguz () symbol, which represents water, flow, sea, renewal, dreams, fantasies, intuition, and sensitivity. The addition of the wolf images is no accident. In Nordic mythology, they symbolize strength and independence. During the Viking age, wolves often defended settlements in exchange for food. In some stories Valkyries rode into battle not on horseback, but on wolves!

In addition, these Valkyrie Hildegard Medals display stunning multi-metal black and gold ennobling on both sides with a mix of pastel colors decorating the full moon shown on the obverse. The effect is absolutely mesmerizing! Just 999 of these spectacular pieces were struck for worldwide release, which means only a lucky few collectors will be able to reach the numismatic Valhalla represented by these medals! A Female Force To Be Reckoned With

Similar to Biblical Angels, the Valkyries were a powerful female force to be reckoned with. The Old Norse Poems provide a list of Valkyrie names who were known as the fiercest warriors in battle. No less than 39 named Valkyries exist, each with a different meaning! Their origin story explains that they are beautiful virgin warriors and the daughters of Odin. “Valkyrie” means “chooser of the slain,” and those chosen by these Nordic Battle Angels will fight beside Odin at Ragnarök—the Twilight of the Gods. The foreboders of war, Valkyries are a sign of female power and prestige and represents the Norse way of life.
