2022 Germania Medal Honors Poland’s Independence

The Germania Mint’s latest release in its Allegories series featuring its namesake Germania—Germany’s female personification similar to our Liberty or Great Britain’s Britannia—is back with a gorgeous new design for 2022. This new medal, the fifth issue in the series, not only features a youthful and vibrant Germania, but it pairs her with Polonia, Poland’s female personification.

Germania And Polonia Standing Strong Together

This medal offers a new take on Polonia, Poland’s female personification. The earliest known Polish appearance of Polonia dates back to the 1560s when she was depicted as a weeping mother bemoaning her plight. In the years since she has appeared in many ways, ranging from being chained or crucified, sleeping, or reigning as a triumphant monarch. Here, Lady Polonia is shown holding a large shield adorned with an eagle symbolizing victory and strength. On her head is a regal crown, a symbol of royalty. To the left of Polonis is Germania, elegantly dressed in an understated bodice-style gown, her long, wavy hair flowing loose and free from a laurel crown made from an oak branch. In her right hand she firmly grasps her ever-present sword.

Germany and Poland have not always had friendly relations. In 1939, Nazi Germany started World War II when it invaded Poland from the west while the Soviet Union attacked form the east, carving up the country between them. After Poland fell under the Soviet sphere of influence following World War II, it took decades for the country to regain its lost independence. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, East and West Germany were reunited, and a new Germany actively support Poland’s participation in NATO and the European Union.
