Go To Bat With The U.S. Mint’s Historic Negro Leagues Baseball Coin Program

It’s only fitting that in 2022 the United States Mint released its Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coin Program. After all, the Baseball Hall of Fame announced that two of the six people slated to be inducted into its hallowed roster in 2022 were from the old Negro Leagues: Buck O’Neil and Bud Fowler. O’Neil was a former Negro Leagues player and manager who was also the first Black coach in Major League history and helped create the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Fowler became the earliest known African-American player in professional baseball when he suited up for an all-white professional team based out of New Castle, Pennsylvania in 1872. To celebrate these men and all the other pioneers in equality, the United States Mint has released a series of clad, silver and gold commemorative coins that pay tribute to the legacy of the old Negro Baseball Leagues.

Designs Recall Baseball Action In The Negro Leagues

In this offer you can get the Brilliant Uncirculated $5 Gold Coin that features a pair of remarkable designs. Struck in 7.65 grams of highly pure 90% fine gold, the coin’s obverse features a portrait of Negro National League founder Rube Foster along with his facsimile signature and an inscription that reads, “NEGRO LEAGUES BASEBALL.” While Black Baseball existed before him, Andrew “Rube” Foster is universally acknowledged as the “Father of Black Baseball” for his unwavering support and dedication to the sport, first as a player, then as a manager and finally as the president and founder of the Negro National League, the first long-lasting professional league for African-American ballplayers. The league operated from 1920–1931 during an era when organized baseball was segregated in the United States. The reverse design depicts the traditional gesture of tipping one’s cap, an important sign of respect for players, along with an inscription that reads, “THEIR LEGACY PLAYS ON.”

Stack Your Line-Up By Adding These Coins To Your Collection!

The U.S. Mint is releasing a combination of just 50,000 Proof and Uncirculated 2022 $5 Gold Negro Leagues Baseball Coins. Surcharges from sales of each coin in the Negro Leagues Baseball Program will go to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri for education outreach programs and exhibits. Among those players enshrined there is Toni “Tomboy” Stone, the first woman to play professional baseball when she suited up for the Indianapolis Clowns in the previously all-male Negro leagues. This also made her the first woman to play as a regular on an American big-league professional baseball team!

Don’t miss your chance to honor the rich legacy of America’s Negro Baseball Leagues, where players who were denied a chance to play in the Major Leagues proved they were just as good as anyone.
