In 1795, the U.S. Mint struck the first gold coin of the United States: the $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle. 2020 marks this coin’s 225th anniversary, and the Smithsonian® commemorated the event by authorizing a limited release of gold and silver proofs featuring the original design.

This silver tribute faithfully recreates the historic and groundbreaking $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle in two full ounces of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. Designed by sculptor Robert Scot, the coin depicted Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, surrounded by 15 stars representing the number of states at the time. On the reverse was an eagle with its wings spread, a laurel wreath in its beak and an olive branch in its talons. The slight changes for this 225th Anniversary release include dual dates of 1795 and 2020 and the Smithsonian’s sun logo on the reverse.

The $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle was the result of the Coinage Act of 1792, which besides creating the United States Mint and established the dollar as the country’s standard unit of money, also regulated the coinage of the United States. It was the first law to authorize the production of gold coins in the United States of America. Specifically, it mandated the weight and purity of three new coins and denominations: the $10 Eagle, the $5 Half Eagle and the $2.50 Quarter Eagle. The Half Eagle was the first to be produced in 1795.
