The American Legion started as an idea among members of the American Expeditionary Force still stationed in France after the close of World War I. The obverse commemorates the origins of the American Legion with an image of the Eiffel Tower and a “V” for victory to represent the formation of the organization in Paris. Around the rim of the coin is a geometric design taken from the American Legion emblem. The coin’s reverse shows a soaring American Eagle with the American Legion emblem depicted above the eagle.
