When The March Of Dimes Turned 75
Throughout President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s time as president from 1933 to 1945, his paralysis due to polio was a closely guarded secret. The dreaded childhood disease never strayed too far from FDR’s thoughts, however, and in 1938 he established the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which has since become known as the March of Dimes Foundation. The non-profit foundation successfully established aid programs for patients and funded research for Polio vaccines. Less than 20 years after the March of Dimes was established, Dr. Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine was approved by the government and by 1979 Polio was completely eradicated from the United States.
Two Leaders In The Fight Against Polio
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the March of Dimes Foundation in 2015, the U.S. Mint issued a beautiful commemorative Silver Dollar that featured portraits of President Roosevelt and Dr. Salk. The coin’s the reverse depicted an intricate and highly detailed image of a newborn baby cuddled in the hand of a parent. Struck by the West Point Mint in highly pure 90% fine silver, these silver dollars were all minted in Proof condition, meaning they were expertly crafted from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.
Small, One-Year-Only Mintage Means There Are Too Few To Go Around
Today, the March of Dimes continues its mission, and currently works to improve the health of mothers and babies. While Congress authorized a combined mintage of 500,000 Proof and Uncirculated 2015-P March Of Dimes Commemorative Silver Dollars, the final edition limit was less than 60,000 with only 32,030 Proof coins like the ones available here struck for worldwide release!
