2006-S San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative Silver Dollar BU
Paying Tribute To The Granite Lady
Released in 2006, this commemorative coin honors the San Francisco Mint on the 100th anniversary of one of the greatest natural disasters in American history, the devastating 1906 San Francisco Earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 3,000 people and destroyed around 80% of the city. Amid the smoking ruins left by the cataclysmic catastrophe stood the Old San Francisco Mint. Not only had the Mint survived, but it was the only financial building to withstand the devasting effects of the earthquake and resulting fire. It was a good thing, too, because at that time the San Francisco Mint held more than $300 million in gold — a third of all the nation’s gold reserves! Built on a granite foundation, the Mint was soon nicknamed “The Granite Lady” in admiration for its solid construction.
Design Honors The Old San Francisco Mint’s History
Struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver by the current San Francisco Mint, this legal-tender commemorative silver dollar pays tribute to the Granite Lady’s rich history and its pivotal role in the rebuilding of the city after the disaster. In the weeks and months that followed the earthquake, the Mint served as a Treasury for disaster relief funds for the city. The coin reflects that role with an inscription that reads, “INSTRUMENTAL IN SAN FRANCISCO’S RECOVERY” seen on the obverse beneath the mint’s image along the coin’s rim. Other inscriptions include “OLD MINT” and “THE GRANITE LADY.” The coin’s reverse is a recreation of the eagle design from the Morgan Silver Dollar.
