2005 U.S. Marine Corps Silver Dollar BU w/Stamp & Iwo Jima Sand
Iwo Jima 75th Anniversary Set
Iwo Jima is a lonely volcanic island in the South Pacific, but 75 years ago the United States Marine Corps secured the strategically located island in what was a turning point in the war. Early on in the five-week-long battle, a group of Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, and the photograph of the moment that was snapped by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal has since become an immortal symbol of the struggle for freedom. This set brings together a trio of collectibles that pays tribute to the famous World War II battle.
- The first piece is the low-mintage Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) version of the 2005 U.S. Marine Corps Commemorative Silver Dollar that was issued to mark the 230th anniversary of the Marines. Struck in 91.7% fine silver, it features a rendition of Joe Rosenthal’s photograph of U.S. Marines raising the American Flag atop Mount Suribachi. The coin’s reverse features the USMC’s Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblem
- Next up is a forest green postage stamp that features the same iconic image issued less than five months after the Marines took Iwo Jima.
- The final piece of the collection is a capsule of sand taken from a beach at Iwo Jima and certified as certified as genuine. This is the first time that Iwo Jima sand has been included in set!
