A Bicentennial Tribute To The Lewis & Clark Expedition

In 1804, shortly after the completion of the Louisiana Purchase between France and the United States, Captains Merriweather Lewis and William Clark set out on the first American expedition to cross the nation’s expansive newly acquired western territory. Over the course of two-and-a half years, they traveled from Pittsburgh to the Pacific Ocean—but they didn’t go alone. Along the way they met a Lemhi Shoshone woman named Sacagawea who would travel thousands of miles with the pair and help them establish cultural contacts with the Native American people they met along the way.

One-Year-Only Coin Honors 200th Anniversary Of The Lewis & Clark Expedition

This commemorative silver dollar honors the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the expedition commissioned by nonother than President Thomas Jefferson. The one-year-only Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar was struck by the “Mother Mint” in Philadelphia in highly pure 90% fine silver and depicts the pair of explorers against a background of trees and a river as they plan the next leg of their journey. The coin’s reverse features an inset designed to look like the Peace Medals Lewis & Clark presented to Native Americans as a token of good will.

Spectacular Westward Journey Nickels

Along with your purchase of this Lewis & Clark Commemorative Silver Dollar, you’ll also get 160 additional coins consisting of four, 40-piece rolls of the U.S. Mint’s Westward Journey Nickels struck in 2004 & 2005 each in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition:

  • 2004 PEACE NICKEL ROLL – The Peace Nickel is the first of four coins in the Westward Journey Nickel Series that the U.S. Mint released in 2004 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The obverse of each coin features the traditional portrait of Thomas Jefferson used on the Nickel since 1938. The reverse depicts elements from the Indian Peace Medals carried by the explorers into the wilderness.
  • 2004 KEELBOAT NICKEL ROLL – The Keelboat Nickel is the second of four coins in the Westward Journey Nickel Series. The obverse depicts the portrait of Thomas Jefferson used on the nickel since 1938. The reverse features a keelboat with full sail. The keelboat transported the Lewis and Clark expedition and their supplies through the rivers of the Louisiana Territory in search of a northwest passage to the Pacific Ocean.
  • 2005 AMERICAN BISON NICKEL ROLL – The American Bison Nickel is the third coin in the series. The obverse design, for the first time in 67 years, shows a new likeness of President Thomas Jefferson. The image appears only on the 2005 nickels in recognition of Jefferson’s role in the Louisiana Purchase and in commissioning the Lewis and Clark expedition. The reverse features an American bison, referred to as a buffalo. The image of a buffalo adorned the reverse of the nickel from 1913-1938.
  • 2005 OCEAN IN VIEW NICKEL ROLL – The Ocean in View Nickel is the last of four coins in the series. Like the American Bison Nickel, the obverse design shows a new likeness of Thomas Jefferson. The reverse shows a scene of the Pacific Ocean based on a photograph of the rocky, western coastline by Andrew E. Cier. The image visually depicts the Lewis and Clark expedition’s exultation on believing they had finally reached the Pacific Ocean after so many months of arduous travel.
