Never to Be Duplicated—1990 Printing Error Federal Reserve $20 Note!

Now here’s something you don’t see every day!

Minting errors are few and far between, and printing errors are even rarer! It’s hard to believe that not only was this note missed by the watchful eyes of quality control technicians at the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing, but it entered circulation and was actually used in commerce. Clearly, the person or persons who used this as payment were NOT currency collectors!

Unique Offset Printing Error Note That Escaped Detection

This note, a 1990 $20 Federal Reserve Note issued by the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta, is classified as an Offset Printing Error, which occurs when no sheet is fed into the press. When this happens, an inked plate comes in contact with the bed. As a result, the next sheet that passes through the press receives an overprint of both designs on a single side. These errors are significant as the back design is clearly overprinted onto the front design.

About The Federal Reserve Banking System

When you consider that there are more than $1 TRILLION American dollars in circulation around the world, there’s no question that U.S. currency plays a monumental role in facilitating the exchange of goods and services here and around the globe. Federal Reserve notes make up the majority of U.S. paper money in circulation today. The rest consists of U.S. notes and other currency still in circulation but no longer issued. As the nation’s central bank, the Federal Reserve issues, distributes, processes, and accounts for Federal Reserve notes in the United States and abroad. The 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks, through their network of branches throughout the country, distribute Federal Reserve notes to the public through depository institutions. The Reserve Banks are decentralized by design and are located in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, and San Francisco.
