Last $20 Note Issued By The Confederacy

When the Civil War broke out in April of 1861, Federal money was cut off to the rebellious states south of the Mason-Dixon line that made up the Confederate States of America (CSA). To create a monetary system that would keep money circulating in the South—and to finance the government and the war effort—the Confederacy began printing and issuing its own paper money. Among those notes were these $20 notes. Today, these notes are extremely popular among collectors and historians alike because they were the last Confederate $20 bills ever issued!

Vintage Southern Bluebacks From The Civil War

These notes are affectionately nicked “Bluebacks” because the back features the denomination “TWENTY” spelled out in large intricate letters over a blue background. The front of the note is even more impressive. It’s a beautiful image depicting the Tennessee Capitol building along with a portrait of Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens. Plus, each Confederate bill was hand-signed and numbered by Confederate officials, proof that they actually circulated among Southern businesses during a time when Brother fought against Brother.
