Established Promote Botanical Knowledge
Located on the grounds of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., near Garfield Circle, the United States Botanic Garden’s (USBG) expressed purpose is to promote botanical knowledge through the cultivation of an ordered collection of plants. Established in 1832, it is the oldest continually-operating botanic garden in the United States. First envisioned by George Washington, the United States Botanic Garden is a living plant museum that informs visitors about the importance, and often irreplaceable value, of plants to the well-being of humans and to earth’s fragile ecosystems.
