A Popular Coin Honoring A Popular President

Following the untimely death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1945, the United States Mint decided to honor his service and leadership through the turbulent years of the Great Depression and World War II by putting his effigy on the dime. The first Roosevelt Dime was released into circulation on January 30, 1946, to coincide with what would have been FDR’s 64th birthday. Because Roosevelt suffered from polio and had helped found the March of Dimes to fight the disease, using his likeness on the dime was the obvious way to honor the popular president. Beautifully designed by John R. Sinnock, the design has remained unchanged ever since.
