1996-S Olympic Soccer Commemorative Half-Dollar Proof
Olympic Soccer Commemorative Half Dollar
The Women’s Soccer competition at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta was a watershed moment in athletics. Women’s soccer was added to the Olympic Games for the first time ever that year and while it was only an eight-team competition, it was a rousing success. The United States fielded a star-studded roster, including Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Michelle Akers, Julie Foudy, and Kristine Lilly. The championship game saw Team USA defeat China 2-1 in front of a crowd of 76,489 spectators at the University of Georgia’s Sanford Stadium—the largest crowd ever to watch a women’s sporting event!
Low Mintage Coin Has Been A Big Hit
As part of the lead-up to the Olympics, the U.S. Mint issued this Olympic Soccer Clad Half Dollar to support the 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games and the programs of the United States Olympic Committee. The coin’s exciting obverse shows a pair of women playing soccer as if anticipating Team USA’s success in the games. The reverse features a design of the mark of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games. The mark highlights key symbols: the Olympic Flame, the Olympic Torch, the Olympic Rings, a Greek column, and a “100” to mark the Centennial of the modern Olympic Games.
