This Kennedy Half Dollar Is 90% Silver!

You may know that Kennedy Half Dollars for circulation have not been struck in 90% silver since 1964, the very first year they were issued. However, since 1992 the United States Mint has struck Kennedy Half Dollars for inclusion in special Silver Proof Sets. That’s what you have here, a 1996 Kennedy Half Dollar that was struck in highly pure 90% fine silver at the San Francisco Mint, meticulously crafted, with mirrorlike surfaces and frosty details. 1996 saw 24,744,000 coins struck for circulation, 1,750,244 struck as proof, but only 775,021 struck as proof in 90% silver.

The Story Of The Kennedy Half Dollar

In November of 1963, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated. To honor the fallen president, the U.S. Mint struck a special Kennedy Half Dollar in 1964. Americans lined the streets outside the Treasury Building for their chance to own an uncirculated version of the coin. In fact, the coin proved to be so popular that the Mint permanently replaced the Franklin Half Dollar with the Kennedy Half Dollar and has been struck ever since!

Big, bold, and beautiful. The Kennedy Half-Dollar is one of America’s most popular coins. Don’t miss your chance to secure one of these beauties struck in 90% silver! Click one to your cart right now!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • POPULAR DESIGN OF A FALLEN PRESIDENT – Featuring U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts’ bust of President John F. Kennedy, the Kennedy Half-Dollar was first struck in 1964 and was originally meant to be a one-year-only tribute to the fallen President. It proved to be so popular, however, that the U.S. Mint has issued it every year since. The coin’s reverse is a modified design of the Presidential Seal by Frank Gasparro, who replaced Roberts as the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver in 1965.
  • STRUCK IN HIGHLY PURE SILVER – This Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 1996 at the San Francisco Mint in 11.3 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver.
  • UNITED STATES LEGAL TENDER – Kennedy Half Dollars are 50 cents legal tender in the United States and measure 30.6 mm in diameter.
  • GORGEOUS PROOF CONDITION – Your 1996-S Kennedy Half Dollar will come in gorgeous Proof condition with beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.
  • LIMITED-EDITION KENNEDY HALF-DOLLAR SILVER PROOF – The San Francisco Mint struck just 775,021 of the 90% silver Kennedy Half-Dollar Proofs in 1996—and they were available only in special Silver Proof Sets!
