Since 1986, the American Silver Eagle, produced by the United States Mint has been the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Despite silver values constantly changing, the demand for U.S. Silver Eagle coins has grown steadily over the decades and today is at an all-time high. Add one or a few to your collection today!

About the 1996 American Silver Eagle:
The 1996 Silver Eagle is distinctive in the Silver Eagle series. In 1996 the U.S. Mint produced the fewest Silver Eagle bullion coins than any other year—only 3,603,386 coins. As a result, the 1996 Silver Eagle bullion coin is valued higher than other years' mintages.

Interestingly, the volume of Silver Eagle proofs actually climbed in 1996 to 500,000, and for the first time since the Mint began setting a maximum mintage for Silver proofs, the entire inventory of 1999 Proof Silver Eagles sold out.

The obverse face of the 1996 Silver Eagle features the "Walking Liberty" design by Adolph A. Weinman, a much beloved image first used on the "Walking Liberty" half dollar coin from 1917 to 1947. On the reverse side is a bold, contemporary interpretation of the eagle from the Great Seal of the United States. Posed in heraldic style, the eagle clutches both an olive branch and sheaf of arrows in its talons, representing a readiness for war but a preference for peace.

The Silver Eagle is a secure, convenient and affordable way to own precious metals. Silver Eagle coins are the only silver bullion coins guaranteed by the U.S. Government for weight and purity—and they're the only silver coin allowed in an Individual Retirement Account.

The overall average price of silver during 1996 was $5.20 per ounce.
