Columbus’ 500-Year Anniversary
Though claims of his “discovering” America may be dubious, there’s no questioning Christopher Columbus’ importance to American history. In August of 1492, Columbus left Spain with the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. By mid-October, he had reached “the New World” (an island in the Bahamas). In 1992, to mark the Quincentenary—the 500th anniversary—of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, the U.S. Mint released this Columbus Half Dollar, and the design is striking!

Struck by the Philadelphia Mint in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, the coin effectively represents five centuries of history. The coin’s obverse was designed by John Mercanti, the now retired 12th Chief Engraver at the U.S. Mint and features a full-length portrait of Christopher Columbus holding a banner in his right hand, a scroll in his left hand, and he is standing next to a globe atop a pedestal to his left. The background displays three sailing vessels. The coin’s reverse was designed by U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver Thomas D. Rogers, Sr., and shows an image of the Santa Maria and the U.S. Space Shuttle Discovery, with the Earth and a star to the upper right of the shuttle.
Exquisitely Struck By The Philadelphia Mint
