U.S. Mint Half Dollar Commemorates World War II

During the World War II years from 1941 to 1945, America sent her young men to fight in battles in the South Pacific, Europe, Africa and even Alaska. On the home front, citizens planted victory gardens, rationed goods, bought war bonds, and held scrap metal drives—all while Rosie the Riveter proved that yes, she COULD do it!

WWII Commemorative Coin Is Bursting With Symbolism

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of America’s involvement in World War II from 1941 to 1945, the United States Mint issued its 1991–1995 World War II commemorative series. Surcharges from the sales were used to construct the World War II Monument in Washington D.C., and a D-Day Monument planned for France (which was never constructed.) Here you can secure the spectacularly designed Half Dollar coin.

The obverse designed by George Klauba features the faces of three U.S. service personnel superimposed upon the “V” for victory symbol at center, beneath a World War II era bomber and five stars above the bomber at the center top. The coin’s reverse designed by Bill J. Leftwich features an American serviceman on the beach of a Pacific Island. Landing craft, a ship, and a fighter plane appear in the background.
