1986 Statue of Liberty Commemoratives
The Statue of Liberty is one of our most enduring symbols of freedom. It’s also the subject of some of our favorite commemorative releases from the United States Mint! This set brings together the 1986 Statue of Liberty Commemorative Silver Dollar and the 1986 Statue of Liberty Commemorative Half Dollar, both released to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the statue’s dedication on October 28, 1886.
The coins not only celebrated the centennial of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor but also America’s history of immigration. Each coin is struck in highly pure 90% fine silver and both come in Proof condition, with frosty devices and mirrored fields. The stunning designs are a stunning exposition in American history:
- 1986 Statue of Liberty Half Dollar. The coin’s obverse design shows a ship of immigrants passing between the Statue of Liberty and the morning sun. On the reverse, an immigrant family stands on Ellis Island, the “Gateway to America” and a famous immigration station, looking across the water at the New York skyline.
- 1986 Statue of Liberty Silver Dollar. This coin features Lady Liberty with the main building of Ellis Island. On the reverse is a hand holding a lit torch along with rectangular rays shining from the flame along with several inscriptions, including one that reads: “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Your Huddled Masses Yearning to Breathe Free.”
In addition to the gleaming proof coins, you’ll also receive a colorful five-cent Series 591 Military Payment Certificate (MPC) paper currency note issued between 1961 and 1964 with a main vignette showing a close-up of Lady Liberty’s head. Featuring vibrant purple, green and yellow colors, the note comes in Circulated condition.
