1983-D Olympic Discus Thrower Commemorative Silver Dollar BU
The First United States Commemorative Silver Dollar Since 1900!
To say the least, the 1984 Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles were a big deal. How big? So big that the occasion spurred the United States Mint to issue an Olympic Silver Dollar as its second commemorative coin since 1954—which in of itself was the first commemorative silver dollar since 1900!
A Modern Interpretation Of An Ancient Greek Classic
And what a Commemorative Silver Dollar it is! Designed by beloved U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Elizabeth Jones, the obverse of this commemorative reinterprets Myron’s Greek discus thrower into a modern design of motion and fluidity. Speaking of, this side also features the famous “Stars in Motion” logo of the 1984 Olympics along with the date of 1983, mintmark, and the inscription “LOS ANGELES XXIII OLYMPIAD LIBERTY.” Flip the coin over and you'll find a majestic American Bald Eagle.
Struck by the Denver Mint in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, this Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) commemorative has the same composition as the Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars. The Denver Mint struck just 174,014 of these coins, a total that represents only about 27% of the entire combined Uncirculated mintage struck by the Denver, San Francisco, and Philadelphia Mints. This mintage is also nine times smaller than the Proof version struck at the San Francisco Mint!
