A Very Key Date Eisenhower Dollar!

The Eisenhower Dollar was America’s last large-sized dollar coin struck for circulation, as well as the last circulating dollar series with silver in its composition. It also had a relatively short lifespan, being minted for just eight years from 1971 to 1978. But after striking 168 million Ike Dollars in 1972, the United States Mint did not to strike ANY “Ikes” for circulation in 1973—not one! Instead, instead the San Francisco Mint struck a relatively small mintage of 1.688 million 40% silver Eisenhower Dollars in Uncirculated condition and sold them to collectors at a slight premium. These represent the lowest mintage non-Proof Eisenhower Dollars ever struck! Here you can secure one of these 1973-S Eisenhower Dollars in gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition just like it was when it was original released more than 50 years ago!

Five Different Ike Dollars In 1973

The U.S. States Mint actually released FIVE versions of the Eisenhower Dollar in 1973, though none of them for circulation. Those coins include two were Proof versions, a 1973-S Copper-Nickel included in U.S. Proof Sets and 1973-S Silver Clad Proof struck exclusively for collectors. The other three were Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) versions: the 1973-P Copper-Nickel and 1973-D Copper-Nickel BU that were available in U.S. Mint Sets and this 1973-S Silver Clad version struck exclusively for collectors. The other two were Proof versions, a 1973-S Copper-Nickel included in U.S. Proof Sets and 1973-S Silver Clad Proof struck exclusively for collectors.

A Stirring Tribute To American Greatness

The vivid memories of this big dollar are one of the reasons many people started collecting coins in the first place. On the obverse is the bust of Dwight David Eisenhower—the nation’s 34th President and a United States Army Five-Star General who served as the Supreme Allied Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II. The coin’s reverse is the same design as that from the insignia of the Apollo 11 mission that landed the first men on the moon. These two designs together pay tribute to one of America’s greatest presidents and one of the country’s greatest achievements all on one coin!
