Celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Wedding Anniversary
In 1972, Great Britian’s Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary with Prince Philip, marking a milestone of enduring partnership. The special occasion was commemorated with various royal events, including a special service at Westminster Abbey and a celebratory banquet at Buckingham Palace, attended by dignitaries from around the world. To pay tribute to the Royal Couple’s Silver Anniversary, The Royal Mint struck a special one-year-only crown-size coin that not only commemorated the event but was the first modern (decimal) crown-size commemorative coin!
Legal-Tender Coins That Weren’t Accepted As Legal Tender
The 1972 Silver Wedding Anniversary Crown coins were struck in 28.28 grams of cupronickel (CuNi) and measure 38.61 mm in diameter or about the size of a traditional U.S. silver dollar. Each is technically worth 25 pence and is legal tender in the United Kingdom. Interestingly, however, while 7,452,100 of these coins were struck in circulation grade, they were not accepted as legal tender by most banks and retailers. The only place they were readily accepted were at Royal Mail post offices. Another 150,000 coins were struck as Proof and were available only as part of the Annual Proof coin set. The coins available here are all from the circulation grade mintage.
An Elegant Design Depicting Love
The elegant portrait designed by famed British artist and sculptor Arnold Machin shows the crowned and draped bust of Her Majesty wearing the “Girls of Great Britain and Ireland” diamond tiara, a wedding gift from her grandmother, Queen Mary. Around her is a legend that reads “ELIZABETH II D ● G ● REG ● F ● D," which translated from Latin means “Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.” The center of the coin’s reverse features two large initials, “E” and “P” for Elizabeth and Philip, set against a background of foliage with the naked figure of Eros between the letters. The initials are topped with the Royal Crown above them. An inscription reads “ELIZABETH AND PHILIP” along with the dates “20 NOVEMBER 1947 – 1972.”
