The First Kennedy Clad Half Dollar With A Special Star Designation
The story of the Kennedy Half Dollar is now numismatic legend: after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of 1963, Congress moved quickly to ensure that the United States Mint would be able to create a commemorative half dollar featuring the former president’s profile along with the Presidential Seal. The coins were released in January of the following year—just a few short months after JFK’s passing. Originally intended as a one-year-only release, the coin proved to be so popular that it replaced the existing Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar, and Kennedy has remained the face of the denomination ever since.
Beautiful Coin Features Exceptional Eye Appeal
In 1964, the U.S. Mint struck the Kennedy Half Dollar in highly pure 90% fine silver and from 1965 to 1970, it struck the coin in 40% silver.
