The Face of America’s Half Dollar

The story of the Kennedy Half Dollar is now numismatic legend: after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of 1963, Congress moved quickly to ensure that the United States Mint would be able to create a commemorative half dollar featuring the former president’s profile along with the Presidential Seal. The coins were released in January of the following year — just a few short months after JFK’s passing. The design proved to be so popular that it replaced the existing Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar, and Kennedy has remained the face of the denomination ever since.

Recently, we located 4 complete sets of Kennedy Half Dollars dating between 1964 and 2020. And when we say complete, we mean it. This set includes coins from the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints, coins in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, shimmering Proof condition, Proof coins struck in 90% and 99% silver, and even the satin-like finish of the JFK Half Dollars found in the 1965 to 1967 Special Mint Sets. There’s even both Types of 1989-S Proofs!
