1960-P Lincoln Cent Small Date PCGS MS66 RD
Small Date 1960 Lincoln Cents
Beginning in 1959, on the 50th anniversary of the Lincoln Cent and the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, the United States Mint changed the penny’s reverse from a pair of wheat stalks to a design that featured the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. This 1960 Lincoln Cent from the second year the coin was issued with the new design actually comes in two varieties—small and large dates!
Difference Between The Large And Small Dates
The small date variety features thick stocky digits, a tighter swoop on the “9” and “6,” and a small “0.” The large date was struck with thinner digits, a wider swoop on the “9” and” 6,” and a larger, rounder “0.” The small date variety is considered the scarcer of the two—which is why when a hoard of 82 coins all struck in 1960 by the “Mother Mint” in Philadelphia came to light and was offered for sale, we grabbed the whole kit and caboodle!
Gem Uncirculated Red Pennies!
What’s more, we sent the coins from the hoard to the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), where they were certified and graded as being in Gem Uncirculated Mint State-66 Red (MS66 RD). The Red designation means these pennies show 95% or more of their original mint red color. These unique pennies won’t be around for long, so get yours now while you can!
