Marking The 150th Anniversary Of Mexico’s War Of Independence

Issued in 1960, this one-year-only 10 Pesos coin commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the War of Independence for Mexico, a conflict fought from 1810 to 1921 south of America’s border between the people of Mexico and Spanish colonial authorities. The obverse features a legend that reads “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” in a semicircle over the familiar Mexican Coat of Arms that shows a Mexican golden eagle standing on a prickly pear cactus devouring a rattlesnake. The coin’s reverse features busts of two of Mexico’s most revolutionary leaders: Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and Francisco I. Madero.

The Father Of Mexican Independence

Hailed as the Father of Mexican Independence, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (1753–1811) was a Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary leader who is recognized as the first insurgent and a Founding Father of Mexico. What he began in 1810 as a movement for independence became a social and economic war between the masses against the upper classes. As such, Mexico’s governing royalist elite were frightened by the prospect of social upheaval and set out to crush the rebellion. Facing the prospect of an armed response, Hidalgo’s followers soon melted away and he was captured while seeking refuge in the United States. He was later found guilty of treason, expelled from the priesthood, and executed by firing squad. After the establishment of the Mexican Republic in 1824, Hidalgo was recognized as the nation’s first insurgent. In his honor, one of Mexico’s states and the city of Dolores were named after him. Mexico’s independence day is celebrated on September 16, the day he proclaimed the insurgency.

The Apostle Of Mexican Democracy

Mexican businessman, revolutionary, writer, and statesman, Francisco I. Madero (1873–1913) successfully ousted the dictator Porfirio Díaz by temporarily unifying various democratic and anti-Díaz forces. He served as the 37th president of Mexico from 1911 to 1913. A gentle man, Madero had studied agriculture at University of California, Berkeley in the United States. Mexico’s relationship with the U.S. quickly turned hostile over Madero’s refusal to turn his nation’s oil industry over to the Standard Oil Company. American government officials soon engaged in an anti-Madero propaganda and disinformation campaigns and lent support to rebels bent on overthrowing the Madero regime—efforts that reached fruition in early 1913 with a coup known as the Ten Tragic Days that saw Madero ousted from power and assassinated. In death, Madero became an inspirational symbol to the democratic forces of the Mexican Revolution. Today he is regarded as “The Apostle of Democracy”
