In 1947, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series came to an end. In its place was the first circulating United States coin to feature someone other than Lady Liberty or a U.S. president — Benjamin Franklin. The reverse features an attractive Liberty Bell design. The series was struck until 1963, when the assassination of John F. Kennedy resulted in the design being replaced by an effigy of the former president.
