FOUND! 1949-P Franklin Half Dollars, Fresh About Uncirculated

These 1949-P Franklin 50-cent pieces haven’t seen the light of day for more than 70 years. At a recent coin show, we stumbled upon a table where the dealer had 400 of them — which we immediately grabbed! Why were we so quick to scoop up the entire hoard? It’s easy; you often find Franklins in heavily circulated condition but not these beauties. Each one is in fresh About Uncirculated (AU) condition with only slight wear and full details even after being struck more than seven decades ago!

The Short-Lived Franklin Half Dollar

Ben Franklin’s effigy is on the obverse, and the Liberty Bell with a small eagle is on the reverse. The Franklin Half Dollar was the first circulation coin in the United States to depict a real historical figure that was not a U.S. President. The series was cut short by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and was replaced by the Kennedy Half Dollar in 1964.

Issued from only 1948-1963, the entire Franklin Half Dollar series is made up of just 35 different dates and mint marks. This 1949-dated coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint has the 13th lowest mintage. Secure yours now or miss out!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • SHORT-LIVED HALF DOLLAR SERIES – The Franklin Half Dollar was issued from only 1948 to 1963, making it one of the shortest-lived series of the 20th century.
  • BELOVED COIN DESIGNS – With an obverse portrait of Founding Father Benjamin Franklin designed by John R. Sinnock and a Liberty Bell reverse designed by Gilroy Roberts, the eighth and ninth Chief Engravers of the U.S. Mint respectively, the Franklin Half Dollar is an exquisitely designed coin that is popular among collectors.
  • STRUCK IN HIGHLY PURE SILVER – Franklin Half Dollars were struck in 12.5 grams of 90% fine silver and measure 30.6 mm in diameter.
  • UNITED STATES LEGAL TENDER – Though they have not been issued in more than half a century, Franklin Half Dollars are still accepted as legal tender, though their collector value far exceeds their 50 cents legal-tender denomination.
  • ABOUT UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Your 1949-P Franklin Silver Half Dollar will come in About Uncirculated (AU) condition.
