Franklin Half Dollars From The San Francisco Mint
Two years after the end of World War II, it was time for a change. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar series came to an end in 1947 and was replaced by the Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar. The Franklin Half Dollar was the first circulation coin in the United States to depict a real historical figure that was not a U.S. President. But long before the series was cut short by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, the San Francisco Mint stopped striking the coin. The first S-Mint Franklin was struck in 1949, and the last in 1954 with none being struck in 1950.
Add A Low-Mintage ’Frisco Franklin To Your Collection
The reverse displays the Liberty Bell along with a small eagle, as it is required for an eagle to be a part of any U.S. coin design. Here you’ve got a 90% fine silver Franklin Half Dollar dated between 1949 and 1955 (date our choice) from the San Francisco Mint—which struck just 7% of the total—in Fine to About Uncirculated (F–AU) condition. And, while these coins were used heavily in circulation during the 1950s, an even worse fate awaited them, as many were melted down in the 1960s when silver prices skyrocketed.
