1946-S Silver Washington Quarter NGC MS66
Low-Mintage, Key-Date 1946-S Washington Quarter
Following the end of World War II, things gradually began to return to normal in the United States as soldiers and sailors made their way home from battlefields around the world. Stan “The Man” Musial was leading the Cardinals to victory over the Boston Red Sox in the 1946 World Series, the New York Knicks defeated the Toronto Huskies in the first NBA game, Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed starred in the classic film It’s a Wonderful Life and the U.S. granted the Philippines its independence.
But changes were also afoot. While the U.S. Mint struck billions of coins since the start of the decade, production fell back in 1946. Nowhere is this more evident than with the mintage of the 1946 Silver Washington Quarter. While approximately 66.7 million Washington quarters were struck in 1946 — a relatively small sum to begin with — just 4.2 million were struck at the San Francisco Mint, the second lowest mintage from 1940 until 1964 when the coin was no longer struck in 90% fine silver.
In the late 1970s when silver skyrocketed to $50 an ounce, large numbers of Washington Quarters were sacrificed to the melting pots. No one knows for sure how many 1946-S are left, but you can secure this low-mintage, key-date coin now graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in Gem Uncirculated State-66 (MS66) condition.
How did we secure theses coins in such a high grade? It’s a story that starts in 1946 shortly after the end of World War II. The nation was desperate to get back on track and one collector, wanting to secure a large quantity of silver, went to his local bank and secured 30 wrapped rolls of 1946-S Washington Quarters. That’s 1,200 coins in all! Those rolls were tucked neatly in a safe, and there they sat...until now! On a recent trip, one of our buyers discovered this hoard of fresh coins and quickly sent a number off to NGC for grading. Each has been hand-picked for quality and eye appeal and will make a wonderful addition to your personal collection. Secure yours now!
