Run, Don’t Walk, To Get One Of These High-Grade Vintage WWII-Era “Walkers”
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar—affectionately referred to as a “Walker” by knowledgeable collectors—is surely one of the most popular coins ever struck by the United States Mint. Considered to be among America’s most beautiful coins, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar exemplifies American spirit and pride, with Miss Liberty walking toward the sun on the obverse and a bold eagle with outspread wings on the reverse. In fact, the design also graces the American Silver Eagle Dollar, the best-selling coin on the planet.
A Staple Of American History From The “Mother Mint”
Struck in highly pure 90% fine silver from 1916 to 1947, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar design shows Lady Liberty striding towards the sun, her right hand open and outstretched as if in invitation. In her left arm is a bouquet of olive branches. The coin’s reverse depicts a stylistic eagle standing on a rock ready to take flight. A mountain pine sapling springs from the rock, symbolizing America. Famously designed by Adolph A. Weinman, these patriotic coins always proved difficult to strike, meaning that finding circulated specimens in nice condition can be difficult. In addition, many Walkers wore out in circulation or were thrown into the melting pots for their precious silver. The simple ravages of time since the last Walkers were struck have also reduced the number of coins available to today’s collectors. But here you can secure one of these beauties struck in 1942 at the “Mother Mint” in Philadelphia Mint that have been graded by either the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) or the Professional Coing Grading Service (PCGS) as being in mouthwatering Gem Uncirculated Mint State-65 (MS65) condition!
The United States In 1942
Many of the major events of 1942 when this coin was struck are related to America’s involvement in World War II. It starts with U.S. auto makers switching from producing cars to manufacturing war-related materials like tanks and cannons. The minimum draft age was lowered from 21 to 18, prompting many high school students to volunteer for the military immediately upon graduation in 1942. Also that year, Congress created the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). And, in a major victory, the U.S. Navy’s defeat of a larger Japanese invasion fleet at the Battle of Midway turned the tide in the Pacific Theater. On the home front, Bing Crosby’s White Christmas from the film Holiday Inn became a monster hit and is still a holiday favorite to this day.
