1937-P 50 Cent Antietam NGC/PCGS MS66 With Note
The Other Robert E. Lee Obverse--But He’s Not Alone!
Many in the coin collecting world know that General Robert E. Lee is one of two men on the popular 1925 Stone Mountain Half-Dollar. But he also shared the obverse of another coin--this 1937 Battle of Antietam 75th Anniversary Silver Half Dollar. Struck to commemorate one of the single bloodiest days of the Civil War, this coin features both Confederate general Lee and his opponent that day, Union general George McClellan. The reverse features the Burnside Bridge, where much of the conflict took place.
The very first of these commemorative coins to be struck was offered to President Franklin Roosevelt on August 12, 1937, and the remainder was offered by the Washington County Historical Society. A one-year-only issue, only 18,028 were struck. Comes graded in Mint State-66 (MS66) condition by NGC or PCGS, accompanied by a Civil War-era South Carolina bank note and a three-piece vintage coin set titled "Vanishing Cents of the Civil War." Grading Service Varies.
