1933–1945 Germany Third Reich Nazi 5-pc Set
WWII Third Reich Nazi Five-Coin Set
Each coin in this five-piece set likely circulated during World War II and could have lined the pockets of members of the Nazi party, fueling the German economy and military during a very tumultuous period. The set consists of the five smallest denominations struck by the Third Reich between 1933 and 1945 and consists of 1 Reichspfennig (zinc), 5 Reichspfennig (zinc), 10 Reichspfennig (zinc), 50 Reichspfennig (aluminum), and 100 Reichspfennig (nickel) coins.
Where’s Adolf?
It’s interesting to note that while Adolf Hitler’s face appeared almost everywhere in Nazi Germany appearing on the cover of magazines, the front pages of newspapers, and staring out from the propaganda posters, it never appeared on German coins. Unlike coinage from many other countries at the time, German currency did not feature the effigy of its Head of State, meaning the effigy, der Führer Adolph Hitler, Nazi Germany’s supreme leader, was noticeably absent from these coins. In fact, the only coins to ever show Hitler’s face were patterns produced as part of a 1941 design competition. According to contemporary accounts, Hitler rejected them because he didn’t want his portrait to appear on coins until after Germany had won the war!
Germany’s Third Reich—the so-called “Thousand-Year Reich”—was in power for barely 12 years. But during that short time, from 1933 to 1945, it exacted a catastrophic toll on the entire world. Known to history as “Nazi Germany,” this period began on January 30, 1933, when Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor. Before the decade was out, Hitler initiated World War II by invading Poland on September 1, 1939, starting an eventual Götterdämmerung that would plunge Germany and most of Europe into years of chaos that have lasting effects even to this day.
