1922-P Peace Dollar NGC MS64 Smithsonian Institution Coin Classics
First Year of Issue for "Low Relief" versions -- The 1922 Peace Dollar
Following the unprecedented success of the Morgan Silver Dollar, the bar was set high for the US Mint to establish a new silver dollar that would capture the hearts of collectors worldwide. They met the challenge with the Peace Silver Dollar, but the Mint’s first attempt at the coin, a "high-relief" version that was difficult to accurately strike, proved ultimately unworkable. Then, in 1922, the beloved Peace Silver Dollar hit its stride with the "low-relief" version of the coin. For the next decade and more, these coins would reintroduce silver dollars to the U.S. economy, and symbolize the peace and prosperity of the roaring twenties.
Today those coins can be challenging to find at the higher grades, but GovMint.com has recently secured a limited number available for collectors. They’re ready for you and your collection now.
The First Year of Issue for a Lasting Legacy: 1922
1922 was a year of firsts. In Georgia, Mrs. W. H. Felton became the first female US senator. In May of that same year, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington, DC, opening its doors to the American public in celebration of the 16th president of the United States. And at the historic Philadelphia Mint, the first editions of the revised Peace Silver Dollar rolled into production. These impressive coins, minted in 90% fine silver, weigh 26.73 grams and are a robust 38.11 mm in diameter.
- A BEAUTIFUL COIN TO CELEBRATE AN END OF WARTIME WITH THE SYMBOLS OF PEACE-- Based on an Anthony de Francisci design, the Peace Dollar’s imagery is iconic. Its obverse features Lady Liberty facing left, her hair flowing beneath a crown of rays. It includes the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date "1922." The coin’s reverse depicts a perched eagle gazing out over a sunrise, the symbol of America at peace. Also included on the reverse are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "ONE DOLLAR."
- AN ECONOMICAL WAY TO START YOUR PEACE DOLLAR COLLECTION– First-in-series coins are collector favorites, and Peace Dollars for this year just one or two grades higher can cost hundreds more. You can start your collection economically with this coin.
