Gorgeous 1917-D Mercury Dime Error

In 1917 – the second year the U.S. Mint struck the Mercury Dime – something went wrong. At least one coin was broadstruck out of collar, giving it an out-of-round larger size. Look close at the rim and you’ll notice that it is exceptionally thick and flat.

A “broadstrike” is coin that is struck outside the collar. Without a collar there is nothing to contain the coin during the minting process resulting in the planchet expanding to a diameter larger than what was intended. Thus, the collar acts like a retaining ring that establishes the coin’s final diameter. In order to qualify as a broadstrike, the full design must be present on both sides of the coin.

Normally, the U.S. Mint does an exceptional job of catching these error coins before they make it into circulation. Add in the fact that this coin is more than 100 years old and features one of the most beautiful designs every created for U.S. coinage, and you have a fun and interesting piece – one the U.S. Mint wishes you never had the chance to see!

You want scarcity? The Smithsonian® does not even have an example of this coin. The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) has never graded another version of this coin and has only seven non-error coins of this date and mint that grade higher. This coin has been certified and graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being in Gem Uncirculated Mint State-65 (MS65) condition and it’s the only graded and certified error of this date!

This gorgeous coin will not stick around for long. Reserve it to you cart right now before you miss out on this opportunity!
