In 1917 – the second year the U.S. Mint struck the Mercury Dime – something went wrong. At least one coin was broadstruck out of collar, giving it an out-of-round larger size. Look close at the rim and you’ll notice that it is exceptionally thick and flat.

A “broadstrike” is coin that is struck outside the collar. Without a collar there is nothing to contain the coin during the minting process resulting in the planchet expanding to a diameter larger than what was intended. Thus, the collar acts like a retaining ring that establishes the coin’s final diameter. In order to qualify as a broadstrike, the full design must be present on both sides of the coin.

Normally, the U.S. Mint does an exceptional job of catching these error coins before they make it into circulation.
