1916-D Mercury Dime PCGS VF-30
Key Date 1916 Mercury Dime
Struck during the second year of World War I, the 1916 Mercury Dime is considered a key date in the series. Well known for its beautiful profile of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap (often mistaken for the god Mercury, resulting in the coin’s famous nickname), this coin is also a first-year issue. The series began during the First World War, and was so popular that it lasted through the second, seeing its last issue in 1945. This long career may also be due to its design, which many consider to be the most beautiful ever struck by the U.S. Mint.
What really makes this coin stand out from its peers, however, is its precious “D” mint mark of the Denver Mint. While 22,180,080 Mercury Dimes were struck in Philadelphia during 1916, and an additional 10,450,000 were struck in San Francisco, just 264,000 were struck in Denver!
A must-have for any U.S. collector, this coin is difficult to locate today, especially in Very Fine-30 (VF-30) condition. There’s no telling how many of that relatively tiny mintage still exist after more than 100 years. Don’t let this coin get away!
- KEY DATE FOR ENTIRE MERCURY DIME SERIES – The Mercury Dime was issued from 1916-1945. In addition to being an important first-year-of-issue coin, this coin was struck at the Denver Mint in much smaller quantities compared to other Mints. Denver struck just 264,000 Mercury Dimes in 1916 compared to more than 10.4 million at the San Francisco Mint and more than 22.1 million at the Philadelphia Mint!
- BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC DESIGN – One of America’s most beloved coins, the Mercury Dime features an image of Lady Liberty with a winged Phrygian cap that made her look like the Roman god Mercury. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the image was so popular that when the U.S. Mint struck in first Palladium Eagle coin in 2017 it selected Weinman’s design!
- STRUCK IN FINE SILVER – This key-date Mercury Dime is struck in 2.5 grams of 90% silver.
- 100-YEAR-OLD LEGAL TENDER – The Mercury Dime was 10 cents legal tender. In 1916, it could have purchased a bottle of ketchup, a loaf of bread or a ticket to a silent film.
- GRADED IN REMARKABLE VERY FINE CONDITION – Your 1916-D Mercury Dime has been graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being in Very Fine-30 (VF-30) condition, meaning there is some wear present, but a remarkable grade for such a scarce coin that circulated heavily before, during and after World War I.
This first-year 1916 Mercury Dime form the Denver Mint is a scarce key-date coin. Add it to your collection today in Very Fine-30 condition!
