What you have here is a rare 1904 $20 Liberty Gold Coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint that has not only been certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in Select Uncirculated Mint State-62 (MS62) condition, but comes sonically sealed in a museum-quality acrylic holder and encapsulated with a label personally signed by the former 34th and 39th Director of the U.S. Mint, David J. Ryder, who was also named one of Coin World’s “Most Influential People in Numismatics (1960-2020).”
One Of The Most Popular Collectible Gold Coins
The 1904-P Gold Double Eagle is one of the most popular collectible gold coins among collectors, and MS62 is a very popular grade among those collectors seeking gold coins that are a significant “cut above” the basic Uncirculated grade of MS60—and much scarcer! That’s because from the moment they were struck these coins were at risk for grade-lowering damage as they banged down on top of each other when they were rifled out of the coin press. They were then transported in 1,000-coin canvas bags from the mint to banks, then from bank to bank, jostling each other at every turn. So, it’s no surprise that the number of $20 Gold Liberty coins with full mint luster still intact and minimal “bag marks” is much lower.
Roosevelt Initiates The Beginning Of The End
1904 is a key year in numismatic history because U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt wrote a letter to the Secretary of Treasury in which he stated that our coinage is “artistically of atrocious hideousness.” This letter had a major impact on 20th century coin design—many which are highly sought after and collected today. These 1904 Gold Liberty coins are among the last to feature James Longacre’s design that depicts Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “Liberty,” with thirteen stars surrounding her head, representing the original thirteen colonies. The reverse showcases an eagle with a shield on its breast, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons.
Coins That Escaped The Melting Pots
Struck in 33.44 grams of highly pure 90% fine gold, many of these coins were melted down due to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1933 Gold Recall, which contributes to the scarcity of surviving specimens. That makes this high-grade coin—along with its autographed label—a premium coin for your collection in every respect. Only limited quantities are available, however, so hurry and reserve yours now before our limited supplies are gone!
