Low-Mintage 1903-P Morgan Silver Dollar
Nicknamed the “Mother Mint,” the Philadelphia Mint was the nation’s first mint, opening its doors in 1792. That’s where the 1903 Morgan Silver Dollars you see here were struck, in a quantity to the tune of 4.652 million. That may seem like a lot, but actually it’s not a high mintage for the series—just look at the mintage for 1902 when Philadelphia struck 7.994 million Morgans. Add in the ravages of time and the likelihood that many succumbed to the melting pots and that means there are only a fraction of these left. At more than 120 years old, it’s a wonder that any of these coins survived through to today. And now you can secure one in gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition that retains its original mint luster!
The Workhorse of the Wild West
First struck in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was one of the workhorse coins of the American Wild West. Minted in highly pure 90% fine silver, Morgans are the most widely collected and coveted silver dollars in U.S. history—perhaps in part because their numbers were dramatically slashed by the Pittman Act of 1918, which called for millions of Morgans to be melted. It’s believed that as few as 15% of all Morgans still exist in any condition.
