1901-S $10 Gold Liberty Overdate

When the U.S. Mint branch in San Francisco struck this $10 Gold Liberty in 1901, the date was re-punched counterclockwise to the first impression. The result is an interesting variety of $10 Gold Liberty known as VP-001, which shows doubling below the first two numbers of the date, and above the third. Incredibly, this coin has lasted close to 120 years looking as though it was recently struck.

Of the original 2.8 million struck, only 18,118 have been graded by the top third-party grading services. Of those, just 236 have been graded higher, and none of them are of this fantastic variety—making it tied for the finest of its variety known! Don’t miss out on this overdate 1901 $10 Gold Liberty!

  • FAMOUS LIBERTY HEAD DESIGN – Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the U.S. Mint’s third Chief Engraver, the Liberty Head design was used on the $10 Gold Eagle from 1838 to 1907. The motto “In God We Trust” was added in1866. This popular, long-running design was ultimately replaced in 1907 by the incuse Indian Head piece designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

  • STRUCK IN FINE GOLD – These Gold Eagles were struck in 16.718 grams of 90% gold.

  • LEGAL-TENDER U.S. COINAGE – Each 1901-S Gold Liberty Eagle is $10 legal tender and was used mostly by banks and in large merchant transactions.

  • INCREDIBLE HIGH GRADE COIN – Your 1901-S $10 Gold Liberty has been certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to be in Gem Mint state-65 (MS65) condition. Out of the 2,812,750 Gold Liberty Eagles struck, NGC has graded just 1,330 to be in this condition, with less than 250 examples graded higher!

  • INCREDIBLY SCARCE GOLD COIN – Not only have very few of the Liberty Gold Eagles from 1901 ever achieved this high grade, but this is also a rare overstrike coin. The date was re-punched counterclockwise to the first impression, with doubling visible numerals 19 and above the zero. NGC has graded only 19 coins with this variety and none with this variety have been graded higher than MS65!
