1900-O/CC Morgan Silver Dollar NGC VF35 w/Ryder Signature
What The…? How Did This Even Happen?
These 1900-O over CC Morgan Silver Dollars show a New Orleans mint mark punched over a Carson City mint mark. How could that happen, especially when those two mints were around 2,200 miles apart? The “Mother Mint” in Philadelphia made all dies used in all United States branch mints. Oddly, the Carson City Mint produced no silver dollars after 1893, so it had no need for silver dollar dies in 1900. Were the 1900-O/CC Dollars made using leftover dies from years earlier, or did an engraver make a mistake in 1900 by punching a CC mint mark into some reverse dies? Curiously, this error was made on more than one die.
The total New Orleans mintage in 1900 was 12.59 million, and no one knows how many (or how few) 1900-O/CC Morgans exist. But you can get one certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in Choice Very Fine-35 (VF35) condition. You’ll also receive a coin magnifier so you can get a close-up look at the unique mint mark!
Morgan Silver Dollars And The Fabled New Orleans Mint
First struck in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was one of the workhorse coins of the American Wild West. Struck in 90% silver, they’re believed to be the most widely collected and coveted Silver Dollar in U.S. history—perhaps in part because their numbers were dramatically slashed by the Pittman Act of 1918, which called for millions of Morgans to be melted. It’s believed that as few as 15% of all Morgans still exist today in any condition. And of all the Morgans ever struck, some of the most unique are those struck at the fabled New Orleans Mint, the only U.S. branch mint to be controlled by three different governmental bodies—the State of Louisiana, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America. And now you secure this dazzling vintage 1900-O Morgan Silver Dollar struck at the New Orleans Mint.
