San Francisco Barber Quarter From The 1894 World’s Fair
In August of 1893, the United States Congress approved Golden Gate Park in San Francisco as the site for a world’s fair to be held the following year called the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. Held from January 27 to July 5, it encompassed 200 acres, housed 120 structures, and hosted an estimated 2 million visitors. While fair-goers delighted to such attractions as Daniel Boone’s Wild Animal Show, the Haunted Swing, and Mining Camp, across town the San Francisco Mint was striking Barber Quarters—and it’s possible that some of the 1894-S Barber Quarters that we have here lined the pockets of fairgoers during the Exposition. Who knows, maybe one of these quarters even paid for a ride on the Haunted Swing!
During the Barber Quarter series, the San Francisco Mint struck only 8% of the total mintage—by far the lowest output for this series. These are in Good (G) condition and come encapsulated in an acrylic holder with a 3" x 5" storycard. Availability is limited, so act now!
