Get Your 1893-S Gold Liberty Half Eagle Before They Melt Away!
The $5 Gold Liberty Half Eagle was the workhorse gold denomination for much of its tenure—a large enough denomination for most day-to-day transactions, yet small enough for merchants to easily make change. Here you can secure a key-date $5 Gold Eagle that was struck in 1893 at the San Francisco Mint that’s still in Uncirculated condition more than 130 years after it rolled of the presses!
A Beautiful Design From the San Francisco Mint
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse depicts the head of Liberty facing left, her hair tied in a bun secured by a string of beads, wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. The reverse shows a Bald Eagle with its wings spread and a large shield at its breast, its talons grasping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. These coins were minted at the famous San Francisco Mint—the celebrated “Granite Lady,” that survived the 1906 earthquake and fire while safeguarding the city’s precious treasures.
These Coins Escaped The Gold Recall Of 1933
Millions of gold coins were melted during the Gold Recall of 1933. In order to help an economy that was still floundering following the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt felt the best way to fight off an economic downturn was to inflate the money supply as well as increase the amount of gold held by the Federal Reserve—which would in turn increase its power to inflate the money supply. So, on April 5, 1933, Roosevelt signed an executive order known as the Gold Recall of 1933, requiring all Americans to trade in their gold, gold bullion and gold certificates. Millions of gold coins were melted. This, along with the fact that many $5 Gold Liberty coins wore out from heavy use in circulation, means nobody knows how many of these $5 Gold Liberty coins still exist today.
Mint State Grades And Minuscule Populations
Each coin available here has been authenticated and graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being in Uncirculated Mint State-62 (MS62) condition. Quality is always a driving factor for collectors, so Mint State (MS) grades are preferred given the coin’s luster and overall appearance over specimens that have wear from circulation. Overall, U. S. Mints struck 60,620,584 of these $5 Gold Liberty coins during the run from 1839–1908. While the Philadelphia Mint struck 1.528 million of these coins in 1893, the San Francisco Mint struck just 224,000—a mere 12% of that year’s entire mintage! Of those, only 1,053—0.47% of the total 1893 San Francisco mintage—have been graded by top coin grading services PCGS or NGC in Mint State-62 (MS62) condition!
