First-Year-Of-Issue Barber Quarters
Just think—131 years ago, it wasn’t the Washington Quarter but the Barber Quarter that folks had rattling around in their pockets and coin purses. Struck in highly pure 90% fine silver, these coins were designed by Charles Barber, then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Other designs had been submitted—more than 300, in fact—but the supremely egotistical Barber, as part of a panel of judges, rejected them all in favor of designing the coin himself. The coin features a bust of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap on the obverse while the reverse imitates the Great Seal of the United States and depicts an eagle with outstretched wings holding an olive branch with thirteen leaves in its right claw and a bundle of thirteen arrows in its left. Below the eagle is the denomination “QUARTER DOLLAR.”
Each of the coins available here comes from the first year of issue, 1892, and each is in Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition. Imagine what they were used to purchase! Most circulated heavily and were worn down or melted for their silver content during times of high silver values. Don’t wait to get yours, order now!
COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
● FAMOUS BARBER DESIGN – The Barber Quarter was struck from 1892 to 1916. The classic design was the work of Charles Barber, the U.S. Mint’s 6th Chief Engraver. It features Lady Liberty with her hair tucked up under her cap on the obverse while the reverse shows a Heraldic Eagle based on the Great Seal of the United States and the denomination.
● STRUCK IN FINE SILVER – Barber Quarters were struck in 6.25 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver and measure 24.3 mm in diameter.
● UNITED STATES LEGAL TENDER – Struck from 1892 to 1916, the Barber Quarter was 25 cents legal tender in the United States and circulated widely throughout the nation up to and during World War I.
● NICE COLLECTOR GRADE CONDITION – Your 1892 Barber Quarter will come in Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition.
