Gorgeous, Proof-Like Carson City Morgan Silver Dollar

Morgan Silver Dollars are known as the coins that built the Old West, and this one is among the cream of the crop! It has been designated as Proof-Like (PL) by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) which means it was among the first few hundred struck from a brand-new die or a polished die, giving the coin a brilliant, mirrored look that is very eye-appealing. It’s also an 1890-dated Morgan that was struck at the fabled Carson City Mint.

Scarce Wild West Dollars From The Carson City Mint

Back in 1890, the Philadelphia Mint struck nearly 17 million Morgan Silver Dollars. More than 2,600 miles away, the Carson City Mint struck a shade over 2 million. But that’s only part of the remarkable story of why the 1890 Carson City Morgan is so hard to find. You see, folks out East preferred paper dollars, so the coins from the Mother Mint in Philadelphia are much easier to find today in nice condition, as they tended to sit in bank vaults instead of in people’s pockets. But in the West, folks preferred money in the form of these hefty, 90% silver coins. The result was “hard currency” from the Carson City Mint exchanging hands frequently in commerce. That’s why this coin in About Uncirculate-55 (AU55) condition is a real find!

Silver Dollars From The Famous Comstock Lode

Morgan Silver Dollars were struck thanks to the discovery of the Comstock Lode Near Virginia City, Nevada—the richest silver mine in American history. So, it’s no surprise that a mint sprung up in nearby Carson City, Nevada to help handle the load. Surprisingly, the Carson City Mint struck the Morgan for only 13 years, with its total mintage for all years combined making up just 2% of the total mintage of all Morgan Silver Dollars struck between 1878 and 1921. Now, after years of being worn in commerce, scratched in saddle bags, and melted down for their precious metal, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a shadow of its former self. It’s estimated that as few as 15% of ALL Morgan Silver Dollars remain for modern collectors to covet and stash away in their private collections. These were THE coins used by cowboys, gunfighters, saloon keepers and dance hall girls. Who knows where these coins traveled, in whose pockets they rested, or what kind of escapades they saw? Just imagine the history you can hold in your hands with one of these big vintage silver dollars struck in the heart of the Old West!
