High-Grade San Francisco Morgan Silver Dollars Selected For Quality

First struck in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was one of the workhorse coins of the American Wild West. Struck in 90% silver, they’re believed to be the most widely collected and coveted Silver Dollar in U.S. history—perhaps in part because their numbers were dramatically slashed by the Pittman Act of 1918, which called for millions of Morgans to be melted. It’s believed that as few as 15% of all Morgans still exist today in any condition.

Scarce Silver Dollars From The Granite Lady

And of all the Morgans ever struck, collectors believe that the most beautiful are those that bear the “S” mint mark of the San Francisco Mint. This coin was actually struck at the San Francisco Mint’s second building, construction on which was completed in 1874. The building was soon nicknamed the “Granite Lady” due to its massive two-story structure built out of granite to handle the heavy minting equipment. This second building remained in operation for 66 years and was the only financial institution left standing and still in operation following the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.

High Grade Gem Uncirculated Condition

You can imagine our utter joy when we secured a number of key-date 1881 Morgan Silver Dollars bearing the precious “S” mint mark of the San Francisco Mint. Not only have these coins escaped the melting pots over the last century, but each one comes certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in incredible Gem Uncirculated Mint State-66 (MS66) condition. This coin is also a beautiful Rainbow Toned Morgan. This colorization occurs over time when trace amounts of sulfur or other chemicals come in contact with silver coins over a period of years causing the coin’s color and appearance to slowly change resulting in a blush of color featuring lovely and vibrant hues.

A Coin Of Unquestioned Quality

Plus, your coin will come sonically sealed in an acrylic holder with a special green NGC label. The appearance of this unique Green-bordered Label means that prior to being submitted to NGC for grading, this coin was reviewed for its strike, luster, tone, and eye appeal using standards established by a panel of independent numismatic experts at the Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA), one of America’s leading numismatic distributors. The exceptional standards set forth by RARCOA’s independent numismatic experts assures that this coin exhibits exceptional quality.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan — has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America’s “Wild West” and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers, and dance hall girls.
  • CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
  • STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – Morgan Silver Dollars were struck in 90% silver from the famous Comstock Lode and measure 38.1 mm in diameter.
  • LEGAL TENDER SILVER DOLLAR – Morgans were $1 legal tender and struck during the heyday of America’s Wild West era where coins were overwhelmingly preferred over paper currency.
  • HIGH-GRADE UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Your coin was graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) in Gem Uncirculated Mint State-66 (MS66) condition.
  • RAINBOW TONED – This coin is also a beautiful Rainbow Toned Morgan. This colorization occurs over time when trace amounts of sulfur or other chemicals come in contact with silver coins over a period of years causing the coin’s color and appearance to slowly change resulting in a blush of color featuring lovely and vibrant hues.
  • SPECIAL GREEN LABEL – This coin will come in an acrylic holder with a green NGC label that assures that is an exceptional quality coin based on standards established by the Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA).
  • THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence—and fewer still remain in Mint State-66 Uncirculated condition!
