Carson City Morgans From One Of The Greatest Silver Dollar Hoards Of All-Time

These Morgan Silver Dollars are from one of the most significant silver dollar hoards ever, a massive hoard of more than 2 million coins accumulated by a collector in Florida. Each of these coins originated in Government Services Administration (GSA) releases from 1972 to 1980, and comes in the original holder, with a blue wraparound label that features the date and coveted “CC” mint mark from the Carson City Mint. This offer features the key, 1881-dated Morgan!

A Carson City Morgan With A Lot Of Steam

And if that wasn’t enough steam for you, consider the fact this coin has been certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-64 (MS64). This point is especially significant when you take into account that of the 650 million Morgans struck from 1878 to 1904 and in 1921, only 13.8 million—just a paltry 2%—were struck at the Carson City Mint and have the “CC” mint mark!

The Great Treasury Hoard Of The Early 1960s

The great Treasury Hoard began in the early 1960s when word leaked out that some ultra-rare dates were being found in bags of coins being distributed at face value to the public—causing a frenzy that was epitomized by long lines of collectors and dealers that wrapped around the Treasury Building. More than 152 million Morgan Silver Dollars were distributed before public distribution was shut down in March of 1964 at which time an audit of the remaining 28 million coins was taken. That audit showed that of the remaining coins, 2.9 million were Carson City-struck Morgans—which led to a powder keg of excitement among collectors.

Because the government wanted to avoid the chaos that engulfed the first distribution, a plan was devised to distribute these very special coins in such a way that provided equal opportunity to everyone who wanted one, using a mail system, with minimum prices and buying limits. The GSA launched the first sale of Carson City Morgan Silver Dollars on October 31, 1972, the first of seven sales between 1972 and 1980. And THAT’S where these 90% silver Carson City Morgans come from! Each was carefully and quietly amassed by a Florida collector and now they’re being made available to eager collectors who missed out on the Treasury Hoard and GSA sales all those decades ago!

Availability Is Limited, So Act Fast!

The Carson City Mint was closest to the source of the silver being used to strike Morgans: The Comstock Lode in Nevada. The quality of the coins struck there are usually the best of all. “CC” Morgans feature crisp strikes and frosty surfaces and are among the most desirable of all Morgans. And those in GSA holders like this beauty are among the most unique in the entire history of Morgan Silver Dollars! Availability is extremely limited, so act fast to secure yours!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • HOUSED IN FAMOUS GSA HOLDER – All of the Morgan Silver Dollars sold by the General Services Administration (GSA) came housed in a distinctive black holder. While those holders have served as the inspiration for today’s coin “slabs,” many of the Morgans that were part of the original sales have been removed, making those still in their holders that much scarcer and harder to find.
  • KEY MINT MARK AND DATE – Morgan Silver Dollars from the Carson City Mint are the epitome of America’s Wild West. Struck from silver mined from the famous Comstock Lode, coins like these jingled in the pockets of sheriffs, outlaws, cattle barons, and gamblers as they tamed the Wild West. This coin features the key 1881 date.
  • HIGH SILVER CONTENT – Morgan Silver Dollars were struck in 26.73 grams of 90% fine silver and measure 38.1 mm in diameter.
  • HIGH GRADE UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – All of the coins in the GSA sales were from bags of Morgan Silver Dollars the U.S. Treasury discovered had been stored in its vaults decades earlier and seemingly forgotten. Their discovery led to a series of sales between 1972 and 1980. This coin has the added designation of being graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) in Choice Uncirculated Mint State 64 (MS64) condition.

Don’t miss your chance to secure coins from the General Services Administration release with this 1881-CC Morgan Silver Dollar still in its original GSA holder and graded by NGC in Mint State-64 condition. Order now!
