Unique Morgan Silver Dollar Error From The San Francisco Mint

In the 1880s, Nevada’s Comstock Lode was in full production, with loads of silver making its way East for striking at the San Francisco Mint. Among the coins struck were these Morgan Silver Dollars, minted in highly pure 90% fine silver. The Morgan circulated heavily around the United States, and eventually as much as 85% of all Morgans struck wound up being worn down or melted for their silver, meaning only a fraction of the original mintage has survived for today’s collectors.

Unique 1880/79 Error Variety

Amid those survivors, some very interesting “error” coins have also been discovered. Take this beauty for example, an 1880/79 overdate Morgan struck at the San Francisco Mint. The 1880/79-S Morgan Dollar varieties were created when 1879 dies had the last two digits of the date removed and replaced with a 80. However, the mint worker did not completely remove the 79, showing traces of the 79 in the numerals of the 80. This created one of the most popular varieties in the entire Morgan dollar series.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan—has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America’s “Wild West” and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers, and dance hall girls.
  • UNIQUE ERROR COIN – This 1880/79 overdate was created when 1879 dies had the last two digits of the date removed and replaced with a 80. However, the mint worker did not completely remove the 79, showing traces of the 79 in the numerals of the 80.
  • BIG SILVER COINS – Struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a big coin 38.1 mm in diameter. When this coin was plunked down on a counter, its weight meant real money, pure and simple.
  • CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
  • COVETED “S” MINT MARK – The San Francisco Mint was known for producing some of the highest-quality coins in the series, often resulting in Morgans with sharp strikes and fine details making these coin among the most highly prized by collectors.
  • CHOICE UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Your 1880/79-S Morgan Silver Dollar has been graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-63 (MS63) condition.
  • THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGAN – Despite millions of Morgan Silver Dollars being struck from 1878 to 1921, most were lost in circulation or melted down in mass silver meltings. In fact, coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence today!
