1878-S Silver Trade Dollar NGC MS61 PL
Don’t Trade Away This Dollar Coin!
This U.S. Trade Dollar was one of over four million created for use in Asia. If you tried to track them down today, you would find that many have “chop” marks – cuts made by vendors to verify the coins’ purity before accepting them.
This 90% Silver Trade Dollar, struck in 1878 at the San Francisco Mint, is truly a sight to behold. While most of the mintage was lost, melted down or worn out in commerce, this one has survived in beautiful Mint State-61 Proof-like (MS61 PL) condition! Only 30 coins in the entire Trade Dollar series are known to exist in Proof-like condition. When it comes to the 1878-S, just two coins grade higher by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) – placing this coin among the finest known in the entire world!
Just six of these coins are known to exist graded by NGC. The Smithsonian® holds a cleaned coin in MS63 condition. Your uncleaned version sits just two grades lower – and in Proof-like condition!
Don’t let this historic find escape your collection. Secure it now – and whatever you do, don’t trade it away!
- U.S. SILVER DOLLAR NEVER INTENDED FOR AMERICA – Struck from 1873-1878, the United States Trade Dollar supposed to compete with other large silver trade dollars already circulating in East Asia. They began appearing in American commerce, however, as some of these coins were reimported at a profit to silver bullion depositors. The design is a “Seated Liberty” design executed by William Barber 5th Chief Engraver at the U.S. Mint, who modeled his design on the Seated Liberty design created by the U.S. Mint’s 3rd Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht in 1836.
- STRUCK IN FINE SILVER – United States Trade Dollars were struck in 27.22 grams of 90% fine silver.
- LEGAL TENDER AMERICAN COINAGE – These coins were $1 legal tender. While the government passed a law making them legal-tender in the United States, many people didn’t like them because they often traded for less than a dollar.
- GRADED IN FABULOUS PROOF-LIKE CONDITION – Your 1878-S Trade Dollar has been certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in Mint State-61 Proof-Like (MS61PL) condition. NGC has graded only six coins of this type in Proof-Like condition and only two have been graded higher.
- SCARCE AND HARD TO FIND TODAY – United States Trade Dollars are scarce and hard to find today. They were intended primarily for export and struck at time when standard silver dollars were not being issued. Most were exported China and elsewhere in Asia and circulated heavily. Chinese businessmen damaged many of these coins by making holes or chop marks with Chinese characters in their attempts to confirm each coin's silver content.
Coming across this 140-year-old 1878-S Trade Dollar would be a terrific discovery in and of itself, but finding it in Mint State-61 Proof-Like condition is even better! Don’t miss out – grab this coin now while you still can!
