1878 Morgan Silver Dollar Variety Set NGC MS64 5pc
Don’t Just Shake One Tail Feather -- Shake Five!
In 1878, the first Morgans rolled into production at the Philadelphia Mint. However, keen-eyed eagle lovers immediately voiced their concern--the eagle on the reverse displayed 8 tail feathers, when there should only have been seven.
A design change was quickly ordered by Mint Director Henry Linderman, but there was no time to discard the existing dies and maintain the required pace of production. As a result, the mint over-punched the new 7 tail-feathers design over the older 8 tail-feathers dies.
Collected here, certified by NGC in matching Mint State-64 (MS64) condition, is a set of five different varieties of the 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar. You’ll receive the 8 Tail Feather Reverse, the 7/8 Tail Feathers Strong, a "Weak" 7/8 overstrike variety where the correction isn’t as pronounced, a 7 Tail Feathers variety and the "Flat Breast" 1878 variety struck in San Francisco.
