When Is A Nickel Worth Only 3 Cents?
The answer, of course, is when it’s a Three Cent Nickel! You see, the U.S. Mint had been striking a three-cent coin in 75% silver in the decade prior to the Civil War for making change and for buying stamps, which cost 3¢ at the time. Soon after war broke out, however, those coins became a prized possession during the Civil War as citizens hoarded them for their precious metal. The disappearance of these pieces from circulation forced the Mint to change the coin’s composition in 1865 to 75% copper and 25% nickel. The copper-nickel version would be continued to be struck until 1889 and here you can secure one of those 1865–1889-dated coins in Very Good to Fine (VG–F) condition!
